Sarah Thelfell

OPDC Investigator

Senior Research Fellow

Sarah’s research uses neurochemical techniques including fast-scan cyclic voltammetry and HPLC to investigate monoamine transmission in rodent models of Parkinson’s in the OPDC. In parallel, she uses optogenetic technology to light-activate genetically-targeted populations of neurons to further our understanding of fundamental neuromodulatory mechanisms operating within the basal ganglia – a group of subcortical nuclei in the brain which become dysfunctional in Parkinson’s. Sarah is developing this technology to explore the factors which might underlie selective vulnerability of subtypes of dopamine neuron in Parkinson’s.
